Simple DIY Holiday Ornaments With Toddlers

When I stumbled across this simple and oh-so-adorable 3-ingredient holiday crafting project, I knew we had to try it! We threw on some Christmas tunes, gathered all our favorite cookie cutters, and set aside a few hours to have fun and make a memorable mess.

Salt Dough Ornament Recipe

What you’ll need:

  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tsp cinnamon (optional)

How to make Salt Dough Ornaments:

  1. Mix the flour and salt in large bowl. (Optional: Add cinnamon for a festive scent!)
  2. Slowly, add the water until you have a workable piece of dough, not too gooey and sticky. The dough should be close to the consistency of play-dough.
  3. Roll out the dough and cut out desired shape you want for ornaments. *If hanging the ornaments, use a skewer or straw to create a tiny hole for your string. We forgot to do this the first round!
  4. Bake at 275 degrees for 1 hour on each side (add more time if needed)
  5. Paint, decorate and have some fun!

Fun Ideas To Try:

  • Use an assortment of cookie cutters for various shapes!
  • Create hand and foot prints (or paw prints too!)
  • Trace hands and paint Santa Claus (see bottom pic)
  • Put hole in center of ornament and string as garland!
  • Use as Holiday gift tags and decor!
